Online forum powerhouse Reddit has begun tests for a function which will allow its users to set their verified NFTs as their profile picture (or avatar). The initiative follows in the footsteps of its fellow social media giant, Twitter, who recently launched a feature allowing users of its paid version to flaunt their NFTs as their profile picture.
The test was first spotted by developer Nima Owji, who apparently noticed a publicly unavailable banner referencing the project on the platform’s web app. After catching his attention, Owji delved deeper and found that the mysterious banner read ‘Your NFT, now your avatar!,’ followed by ‘You can now use digital collectibles as your Reddit avatar’. After more digging, and after utilizing his web developing prowess, Owji then found references in Reddit’s code to what appears to be a test collection of NFTs on OpenSea.
Reddit spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt later explained how the undisclosed test is at a very early stage: “We’re always exploring ways to provide value for users and communities on Reddit. At the moment we’re testing the ability to use NFTs as profile pictures (avatars) and verify ownership. It’s a small, internal test and no decisions have been made about expanding or rolling out the capability”.
Reddit are yet to comment on what sort of blockchains would be supported by the platform if it were to launch NFT avatars, and how the NFT instalment would generally function.
This is not the first time the forum giant has experimented with NFTs, as last year it released its own Ethereum-based NFT collection called ‘CryptoSnoos,’ a set of four digital collectables which pay homage to the platform’s alien mascot, ’Snoot’. Due to the site’s huge global appeal and almost monopoly-like position in the realm of mainstream forum sites, the platform currently hosts some of the largest and most active NFT-related online communities (called ‘subreddits’) in the world, with its main NFT subreddit having over 350,000 members.
